Limited-edition candles hand-painted by Josh Young will be available for purchase on October 4th at the Mizensir boutique in SoHo. RSVP here to attend.

Mizensir, the fabled Swiss perfume and scented candle maker, has achieved the near-impossible. With legendary Master Perfumer Alberto Morillas at the helm, the team has maintained the craftsmanship standards of a small artisanal workshop while growing the company into a revered global brand.

After decades spent crafting iconic fragrances for world-famous brands, Morillas created Mizensir in 1999, in order to, in essence, tell the story of his life through scent—to capture in the form of perfumes and candles “his passions, memories, and travels,” recollections “as intimate as a piece of chamber music.” So personal, in fact, are the fragrances, that they’re often named after his family members, favorite places, and objects. (Before founding Mizensir, Morillas and his wife created candles as holiday gifts for loved ones, and this tradition of gift giving remains integral to the company’s identity.) Surely, it is this personal, handcrafted approach that, when combined with Morillas’ knowledge of and access to the finest ingredients and latest scientific research, has composed the brand’s signature, and has led to its great success.

This success continues to mount as Mizensir expands its reach in North America. In 2021, the company opened its first US boutique on Prince Street in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood. (Its other two stores reside in Europe, in Geneva and Megeve, France.) And as Mizensir’s American reputation has grown, it has, of course, garnered the attention of scores of influential tastemakers, among them designer Josh Young, with whom the company has formed an exciting relationship based upon a shared sense of artistry.

Young, a celebrated visual artist and designer, has built a reputation for reinterpreting classic themes in unexpected ways. (His paintings not only recall the works of such masters as Twombly and Picasso, but also often incorporate antique and historical imagery to stimulating effect; his interiors show the influence of his design forebears in surprising fashion.) It follows that Young would have developed a great affection both for Mizensir’s legacy, and for its commitment to challenging that legacy in order to remain contemporary and fresh. “I feel passionate about Mizensir and its team,” he says. “Its scents, always layered and never one-note, transport me, and evoke a sense of place and time. Whenever I encounter them, I’m suddenly, say, back in my Pennsylvania childhood on a brisk, winter day. I love that sensation.” Young burns the brand’s Bois Ardent candle constantly, and wears its Ideal Oud fragrance daily.

After making his love of Mizensir known, the company invited Young to take part in an in-store event in the fall of 2022, and its success has inspired a repeat performance. “Hollow Fields” will take place on October 4th, from 5-8PM at Mizensir’s SoHo boutique, and will feature a window display of Young’s creation. Exclusively for sale at the event will be fifty hand-painted candles from Hollow Fields, Mizensir's limited-edition collaboration with Young. “I’m thrilled to take part in this evening,” says Young. “Alberto is a god in the world of fragrance, and it’s an honor to work with him.” Attendees will surely find themselves fortunate to celebrate this collaboration, and the chance to purchase an original work by Josh Young.

A Few of Young’s Go-To Scents

Josh and Alberto both have an avant-garde approach to classical design, and evoke a strong sense of nostalgia with their work. While several generations apart in age, it’s clear they both have a deep appreciation for the time in which they grew up but also the past and its stories.
